Sitting in my office at the end of a snowless December, I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect on this incredible year. Colorado weddings in 2020 looked so different and with much heartache, many of our clients had to cancel their plans all-together. So as I wondered what a new year would bring my family, my business, and my beloved couples, I could only pray that it would be a sense of immense joy, hope, and anticipation. Our Colorado weddings just had to happen for our couples in 2021. None of us knew how 2021 would shape up, but I can say this year exceeded my hopes and expectations. On the very first day of 2021, I woke in snowy Beaver Creek for a beautiful, intimate wedding at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek and Chapel at Beaver Creek. Snow covered the ground and the winter air energized my steps and creativity. I couldn’t wait to begin the year and Katy and Houston’s beautiful wedding day. I cannot think of a better way to begin the year. I worked with beautiful clients whose love stories were either postponed from 2020 or planned last minute as Covid-19 restrictions began to ease.
Traveling from Aspen and Vail to Park City then wrapping the year in Jamaica with my family was a great joy this year. We spent so much time moving travel plans around and trying to fit them in between work and school schedules. I loved getting to photograph engagement sessions in Vail, a proposal in Rocky Mountain National Park, weddings all over this gorgeous state, and create editorial work with some of the most creative professionals in the industry. In Colorado, weddings can take place in such a diverse setting, so I thoroughly enjoy the challenge and renewed energy that comes with shooting in different locations wedding after wedding.
As a photographer, I am always inspired by creating with other wedding vendors. We dreamed up some absolutely stunning editorials this year that challenged me to write a storyline, create imagery that would elicit the emotion of our shoot, and submit the work to publication. I am so honored to share that both editorials I shot this year were published in international publications. How I Love Thee: An Ode to Letter Writing was a shoot that was so close to my soul as both an English major and lover of handwritten letters. Magnolia Rouge published the editorial in October, which was such a thrill! I wanted this shoot to inspire weddings in Colorado to first be established on a deeper connected love that comes from expressive gestures like letter writing. I truly believe we accomplished the heart of what we set out to share in this styled shoot. I cannot wait to begin 2022 with inspiration and styled shoots that have a deep storyline. I love shooting, but I love storytelling even more so these editorials are a perfect way to flex that writing muscle!
Our second editorial created by wonderful Colorado Springs based wedding vendors at Clay Venues was focused on the simplicity of bridal portraits with a coastal aesthetic. I love shooting at Clay Venues which is flooded with natural light year-round. Message in a Bottle was published with Bajan Wed this fall, which was my second international publication of the year. Colorado weddings at this venue are gorgeous! One final highlight of 2021 was being interviewed by Shoutout Colorado Magazine. So if you’d like a little more behind the scenes look at my story, then make sure to read this interview!
I am ready to begin a fresh new year, and I am even more excited to photograph weddings in a new season. This coming year To preserve the caliber of service we provide, we accept a limited number of weddings per year. We will be shifting how many weddings we photograph this coming year as we want to create a fuller story for each of our clients. . In the summer of this year, we decided that Steve would join me full time in the business which has been a wonderful change for us. He will be right alongside me this coming wedding season photographing and working in the business. I am thrilled that we will be working even more together serving the clients we love so much. On a more personal note, we added a little fur baby to our family in November right after Thanksgiving. She has been a dream come true for us, and she helps me remain calm in anxious moments. I am so grateful for the gift of her presence in my life! Who knew little Marleau could change my life so much!
For all of our Colorado weddings and beyond, we will continue to support VOW for Girls in the coming years as we donate a portion of all revenue. I am grateful to have joined them in 2020, and I was honored to speak on their behalf as I shared about giving back as business with Aisle Planner this fall. As our couples plan their Colorado weddings, I want to encourage them to find ways to give back on their day as well. This summer I photographed two editorials that were featured in Magnolia Rouge and Bajan Wed, as well as receiving notice that one of my images was a finalist for the Magnolia Rouge photography contest. This coming January my work will be in print with Rocky Mountain Bride magazine, so keep an eye out for this publication. I am thrilled to continue dreaming and planning creative work for the coming year and to work with wonderful wedding professionals.
Coming in 2022, I will be offering 1:1 mentoring, copywriting for creatives, and a few other offerings for industry professionals. I am excited to be opening the doors to the educational side of my business which touches my educator roots.
